A Study on Accidents Occurred in an University Hospital in Seoul


Abstract
For the purpose of setting out to prevent future hospital accidents, this study was carried out on 49 accidents among 3840 patients (6.03/1000 pts) who admitted to a certain university hospital from Sept. 1974 to Feb. 1975. The delivery case and psychiatric patient were excluded in this study. And the 15 accidents occurred to hospital personnel were also surveyed. Data were collected by direct observation and interview with patient and nurse, and analized by Chi-Square test and percentage.
The findings are as follows;
1. Among the 49 accidents, the most common accidents were falls from bed (42. 86%), the next were injuries on hospital personnel(30. 61%) and the others were side reaction of medicine, drug errors and et cetra.
2. In the accidents of falling from bed, children under the age of 15 were the most frequent victims (11. 2/1000 pts), and that was significant more than expected (P<0. 1).
3. In the accidents of falling from bed, male patients had more incidence than female by the ratio 2:1.
4. The most common patients in the accidents of falling from bed were the neurosurgical and orthopedic disease (13. 51/1000 pts) and those patients had significantly more accidents than were expected (P<0.025).
5. The most common activity of patients who fell from bed was the turning from side to side on their bed (42.9%).
6. In the 21 accidents of falling from bed, there were no side rails except one.
7. The majority of accidents of falling from bed were occurred in ward room (over 4 patients).
8. In the comparison with the mental status of patient and the accident of falling from bed, about 52.4% were alert and rational and about 47.6% were irrational, confused, dizzy and anger. In the severities of injuries, alert patients got almost slight injuries but the irrational and confused patients got almost moderate and severe injuries from falling.
9. The accident of falling from bed happened mostly within 5 days of hospitalization (52.4%) and at night (57. 1 %) .
10. In the 15 accidents occurred to hospital personnel, the first victims were nurses (83.4%) and the next were Doctors (13.3%) and aid nurses (13.3%). In the view of severity of the above 15 injuries, slight degree were 6. moderate were 4, and severe were 5.
